Founded in 1996, the Texas Asian Chamber of Commerce (TACC) serves as a bridge between the Asian business community and the larger business community throughout Texas and in Austin. The TACC is comprised of individuals, businesses and various organizations. TACC members include small business owners; medium and large-sized corporations; as well as individuals based in Central Texas, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.
The Texas Asian Chamber of Commerce created the Texas Asian Foundation (TAF), a non-profit organization, and through the TAF awards money to charitable causes, such as the Asian tsunami of 2004, and funds annual scholarships to Asian American students.
Asians are the fastest growing demographic in Austin and the United States, and many Asians are small business owners with 500 Asian American businesses certified by the Comptrollers Office in Central Texas alone. There are about 86,000 Asians in Austin today, and about 164,000 expected in 2020. The 2010 Census is expected to show that 8 percent or more of Austinites have Asian ancestry, a percentage that rivals than that of Houston’s Asian population (about 6 percent). Today, Austin hosts an Asian population that spans the socioeconomic spectrum and is sourced by several countries of origin, with India, Vietnam, China and Korea being the largest contributors.
